30 Years of MTV

30 years ago, on August 1st, 1981, MTV broadcast its first video, Video killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. It was only available in a few U.S. states at first, before becoming available to the entire nation. It reached Europe by the mid-80s via satellite and cable; later a regional branch was launched (MTV Europe).

MTV is now the staple of the 80s, like Madonna, the Star Wars program, boomboxes and floppy discs. I wonder, what has made bigger impact: CNN or MTV? In fact, MTV was like that 24-hour music news station: with videos, interviews, specials, etc. It was on MTV that I first saw such bands as The Specials, Madness, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Oasis. I was especially fond of a program called 120 Minutes, it was quite educational: nowhere else on TV you could see the likes of The Fall, Public Image Ltd and other ultra indie bands.

By the end of the 1990s MTV faced a fierce competition from VH1 and other music stations, but most importantly, the Internet; the audience was shrinking. It was under such circumstances that MTV turned to reality shows at the turn of the new century, breaking away from its well-established format. It gained a new audience, while averting the old-timers, including me. What’s on MTV now I can only imagine. But it served its purpose and people will always remember the station for what it did back in the 80s.

Do you remember the first video you watched on MTV? Or the music video that impressed you enough to remember it after 20-30 years?

I was born during the nineties but I still remember the Michael Jackson and Bjork videos that got me hooked on the station, but not anymore I don't have the stomach for all the reality t.v. shows they have now

LivioRazlo, you seem to have caught the genuine MTV glory right before the fall. As late as 1998 I remember some cool videos, UNKLE comes to mind... Thanks for your input!

I remember watching MTV a bit but the whole idea just didn't do much for me. I grew up going to concerts and to this day I'd go see a live show before watching videos. Having said that I do watch some recorded live concerts and with sound and HD being so much better some of those are damn good but nothing compares to LIVE!! Good hub, Peace!! Tom

justom, I see your point. My experience was opposite, for there were not many acts that would come to the place where I lived, and so I was reduced solely to listening to music and watching MTV. Finally I moved to a bigger city in Midwest this year and they have interesting and well-known bands and musicians come every week from all over the world! Cheers.

Fascinating history of MTV, moncrief, thanks for your splendid research. I am not a fan of reality shows either so must admit I don't watch much MTV these days.

I love UNKLE and I didn't even know they made music videos let alone back then. I would go to more live shows but not too many bands that I like come to where I live so I'm stuck listening to their albums instead of supporting them through concerts.

@drbj, thanks for stopping. "Reality" shows distracted some from their REAL reality. I'm only glad that it's mostly teenagers who whatch them after school; those kiddos have time. I don't see any responsible adult sitting through them, one by one.

@LivioRazlo, I understand you wholly, for I had the same issue with live bands. We just have to enjoy what we have. Yes, it was only around 2004-2005, I think, when "NEW" music videos mostly emigrated to YouTube, leaving VH1 and MTV with their reality shows and random music speacials. Thanks.

I miss the old MTV. I don't mind some of their shows... I will admit I watch the Jersey Shore. It is so bad it is good. However, I miss all the music videos. Did you know 120 Minutes is back on the air? It started again last week. You can watch it on MTV2 on Saturday night / Sunday morning. It airs at 1 am on the east coast. Matt Pinfield looks like he hasn't aged a day!

Jeannieinabottle, that's great about the return of 120 minutes. Especially since there are SO many indie bands out there. But it's more of a nostalgia here, I feel. Kids just watch the latest videos straight off Youtube. Thank you for you input!
